The story of a close-knit family living in rural California during World War II, this is a beautifully written novel. Many of the chapters could stand alone as short stories - a few as sermons. This is especially true of the chapter titled "Mr. Ara." It's a work that speaks to us all about love, friendship, family, hopes, fears, and disappointments. By all means, read this delightful treasure!

I bought this because I was an extra in the new movie being made from this book, Ithaca, with Meg Ryan directing and playing the mother and I wanted to know more about the story. I loved this story and the reading of the novel. I liked the MP3 CD format because it meant I only had one CD to keep up with in the car, and no trying to swap discs while driving.
A novel that is simple to read but so profoundly uplifiting that I am forever grateful to the author.
Wonderfully inspiring story by one of America's greatest writers.
Saroyan captures the essence of an era and distills it through multiple chapters, each of which tells its own story in a somewhat simplistic way, but contributing to the overall complexity of this marvelous wonder.
I loved it! Saroyan skillfully brings each character alive in the book. Although, there are not many exciting events happening in the story, but Saroyan still manages to captivate the reader. Yes, indeed, he makes you feel that you live among those young boys and like them, you have to struggle in order to cope with your life. Besides, among all the current bestsellers that one reads, it is very enrlightening to read a classical book such as the Human Comedy.

Saroyan's THE HUMAN COMEDY is a highly patriotic, highly sentimental, vintage war-time narrative it gently treats, in part, the tragic telegrams from the War Department that far too many American families received during the WW 2 period. The writing is particularly strong in the final third of the novel. One can easily see why it was so popular, even comforting, to the then contemporary readers.
As suggested in my title, the Mickey Rooney movie is a fitting complement to the book, as well as showcasing what a fine actor Mickey Rooney was.
My teacher read this boot to me in the third grade, and it is easily one of my most favorite books. I'm now in my sixties and I enjoyed the book just as much as I did in the third grade. Be prepared for a sad end which I'd characterize as "dawn is coming even though it's dark right now". This book keeps its freshness through the ages.
Beautiful, classical little collection of stories about a boy and his family caught up in the excitement and heartbreak of World War II America. William Saroyan is one of the great--and sadly often overlooked--American authors of the first half of the 20th Century. Saroyan's central character is a 14-year old boy who takes a job as a telegram delivery boy, often having to deliver the dreaded telegrams from the War Department that always start, "The War Department regrets to inform you of the death of...". His book is intensely human, taking the reader into the daily lives of people in a small town in California. Philosophically, Saroyan sees people as basically good at heart. His depth of understanding of human nature is both illuminating and hopeful. For those readers who love his work, I would recommend that they also take the trouble to find his one-act play, "The Oyster and the Pearl," which is similar in tone. The War Department telegrams change the lives of families forever. This little masterpiece may do the same for you too.
