I very much enjoyed this story. It seemed almost scripted and seamless as I turned each page. This is my first time reading a novella by Denise Hunter. I think she may have found a new fan. One note is this novel is connected to the Chapel Springs series. The first novel in this series is Barefoot Summer. I am interested in learning more about these characters in this series.

A December Bride A Year of Weddings Novella Book 1 edition by Denise Hunter Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
I have seen the Hallmark movie based from this book multiple times, and it's my favorite of the lineup of Christmas movies. But it is far different from the book. In the movie everyone is rich & sweet & kind (except Layla's boss]. In the book we have a perhaps more realistic view. I still love the movie & used the two stars as my visual for the leads in the book. I wish i had read the book first, but it's still a good, quick read. Enjoyed it a lot.
I enjoyed this book very much and actually finished it in about 2/2.5 hours. It was a very easy read, enjoyable characters, and fun Christmas whirlwind romance. Kind of reminiscent of a Hallmark Christmas movie ... actually making this into a Hallmark movie would be a good idea! If you want a relaxing, inspiring read; then you need to check this one out! )
Denise Hunter is one of my favorite Christian fiction authors. She does a great job of developing her characters and drawing the reader into the story. In A December Bride in the Year of Wedding Novellas series, she once again delivers. This is a good story to read while you wait for the second book in her Chapel Springs series to be released in March as some of the characters from the first book, Barefoot Summer, make an appearance.
Layla O’Reilly is still hurting from the betrayal of her fiancé and needing someone to blame, she has focused on Seth Murphy. While Seth didn’t intentionally throw Layla’s fiancé and her cousin together, things progressed and now Layla finds herself attending a wedding that should have been hers. While at the wedding, an opportunity arises for Layla to land a big client for her home staging business, which has yet to take off, arises but it is based on the lie that she and Seth are engaged. Seth has loved Layla since before his best friend, and current groom, started dating her. This is his opportunity to show Layla that he’s not the man she believes him to be.
While Layla struggles with letting go of being hurt in the past and her unfair blame of Seth in what happened with her fiancé, Seth struggles to show Layla that he is a good guy and that he wants more with her than a fake engagement. While Layla decorates his home for a Christmas decorating contest, she learns more about him and finds her feelings are changing toward him. Layla’s brother, Beckett, and his fiancée, Madison McKinley, make an appearance in the novella as well.
****Booksneeze and Zondervan Publishing provided me with a free eCopy of this book in exchange for an honest and fair review. I was not compensated in any way for either a negative or a positive review.
I read the book because of Hallmark Movie of the same name. I love both but I liked the movie more. The book is well written and the characters are real. The plot is clever and heartwarming. In the movie, he is a rich white collar investor with cute parents, and in the book is a rich, hardware store owner orphan. I felt that she deserved more than the country bumpkin (but if I hadn't seen the movie, I probably would have like him more). Either way, both the book and the movie are great.
I was glad that Layla got her own story. She is Beckett's little sister and sister in law to Beckett's wife, Madison. Their story was told in Barefoot Summer. Layla and Beckett grew up in a motherless household with a father who drank too much. But they have both tried to work hard to make a better life for themselves. Layla is left in a pickle when her date for a wedding has to cancel because he is sick. The wedding is between her ex-boyfriend and her cousin and she is determined to show up to let them know that she is over them both and all is well. She really wants to have a date and out of desperation, agrees to go with Seth, a guy she was friends with before she got dumped by her ex. Her cousin is a nasty person and when she is degrading to Layla at the reception, Seth tells everyone that he and Layla are engaged to be married in a few weeks time on Christmas Eve. How funny and crazy the next weeks are with a farce of a wedding. Layla is trying to get a business going and is betting on Seth's connections to help her in the next few weeks and then plans to cancel the wedding plans. What a whirlwind! Sweet story!
After watching the Christmas movie on Hallmark based on this story, I decided to go searching on for this read and I'm so glad I did - although short, it certainly gives you the warm & fuzzy feeling sweet romances taking place during the holidays always do for me. I've watched the Christmas movie version a dozen times already and enjoyed reading this as a follow up. Made my heart light and put a smile on my face, especially since I loved seeing Daniel Lissing and Jessica Lowndes as the lead characters.
